Small, gentle movements often ease an aching joint better than staying still all day. Bend and straighten only as far as the joint feels comfortable.

Long use can wear down the smooth covering at the ends of bones. That wear often brings soreness after stairs, longer walks, or rising from a chair.

Why does the joint feel sore?

Arthritis often causes a dull ache during walking, reaching, or household chores. Extra use may make the soreness stronger later that day.

Swelling can tighten the skin and make bending harder. Stiffness after sleep or sitting may ease once the joint moves.

An ache alone doesn't tell the doctor which part is sore. The exam checks swelling, strength, motion, and the exact tender spot.

The doctor may also read earlier X-rays or other scans. Those medical pictures can show joint wear that an ordinary photograph cannot show.

What can you do today?

Move the joint through a comfortable range, and divide large chores into smaller parts. Don't push through a sharp increase in soreness just to finish the chore.

A short walk or several easy chair rises can keep muscles working. Rest afterward if the joint stays more sore than usual.

Heat or fast swelling in one joint needs prompt medical care. Fever, a new crooked shape after injury, or sudden weakness also needs quick help.

Make a regular appointment when soreness keeps disturbing sleep, walking, or household work. Bring a note saying when it began and which motions make it worse.

Continue the gentle movements that feel safe while the appointment is arranged. QC Kinetix offers a no-charge first visit to discuss regenerative treatment made from your blood: PRP means platelet-rich plasma prepared by concentrating part of that blood for use in the joint without surgery.

  1. The 2010 ACR/EULAR classification criteria define 'definite rheumatoid arthritis' by confirmed synovitis in at least one joint, absence of a better alternative diagnosis, and a total score of 6 or more out of 10 across four domains: number and site of involved joints (0-5), serology (0-3), acute-phase response (0-1) and symptom duration (0-1). This is the formal boundary between inflammatory arthritis and degenerative joint disease.

  2. The 2025 EULAR update recommends methotrexate, ideally combined with short-term glucocorticoids, as initial therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, within a treat-to-target strategy across conventional synthetic, biological and targeted synthetic DMARDs - a disease-modifying drug pathway that has no counterpart in osteoarthritis and which belongs to rheumatology.
